As you might notice from our blog and our issue pages, freedom — and specifically freedom of speech — is a key issue for HALC. The expression of ones ideas and the protection of a robust, open debate is a value that has defined Hellenism through the centuries and one that is the bedrock of America’s own society. Whether you’re reading Homer’s words in The Iliad (“To speak his thoughts is every freeman’s right”) or reading Benjamin Franklin’s arguments in The Pennsylvania Gazette (“Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government”), you will find that the value placed on freedom of expression is one shared by both Greek and American cultures.
Standing up for free speech and other rights is a key part of our mission. Here’s our full mission statement:
The Hellenic American Leadership Council is hereby established to chart a new course for the Greek-American community: to ensure the continuity of a distinct and distinguished Greek- American community; to promote a renewed commitment to civic involvement, human rights and democratic values in the United States and around the world; and to enhance the historic relationship between the United States and worldwide Hellenism.
